Medicom Toys RAH DX Kamen Rider Old 1 vs New 1

The DX versions of the both Kamen Rider Old 1 and New 1 figures are pretty much the same as the original version in the ’90s but with a little bit of an improvement.

Too bad that by the time I got these 2 DX figures, the older versions were already gone. Otherwise, I could have a direct comparison of the two versions.

According to my memory, details of the DX versions are pretty much identical to the older ones. I do not see there’s anything surpass the older versions in terms of details or material use.

I think the improvement that was made is the inner body itself. I believe the DX versions have a better scale, and articulations.

Kamen Rider Old 1 comes with the actual human form head sculpt and the helmet can cover the head sculpt, which is very cool!! Because of that, the head vs the body scale of the Old 1 appears a little bit off. But I still like this feature a lot!!

On the other hand, Kamen Rider New 1 has a better scale. Pose-ability is also better than Old 1 because of the material use for the uniform.

Lastly, the Kamen Rider Old and New 1 stand side by side together for your comparison.

Three A Real Steel Atom

If you ask me who makes the best large scale robot figure these days? The answer is “ThreeA”!

The Real Steel Atom is an excellent demonstration of ThreeA robot figures. The figure stands about 20″ tall. The entire figure has the ThreeA trademark rustic looks. There are working pistons everywhere throughout the entire figure, it is amazing how ThreeA engineer all the pistons to work together when you move the joints. (Caution: You will need to learn how these pistons work, otherwise you will risk breaking the pistons.)

Although the joints are not the most articulated due to the complexity of the pistons, but they have tried to make it as articulated as it can indeed. There are ratchets in most of the joints, makes it feel solid.

The figure has lighting installed on the head and the body. (I just ran out of battery at time of photographing, you have to search somewhere else to see the effect. It is cool!!!) To make it movie accurate, ThreeA has even installed a fan on the back. When Atom activated, the lights and fan will turned on.

As cool as it is, all these electronic components make the figure extremely top heavy. The lower body is already slimmer than the upper body due to the original design. Also, the feet has a lot of joints in there. All these adds up, that makes this figure almost impossible to stand probably other than just standing straight. Therefore you can see there are not many posing photos in here.

Atom09If you ask me what else ThreeA can do to make it TRULY the best large scale robot figure these days? The answer is simple “a display stand”!

Hot Toys 1/6 Jack Sparrow Cannibal King Version

One of the earlier Hot Toys release, and also my first Hot Toys figure.

I will say compare to the prototype photos, the production head sculpt is not as good. But it is already better than the Medicom version. And Hot Toys has definitely improved to perfection on their work over the years!

The two head sculpt: The Cannibal King head (which is pretty good, I will say it captures about 80 – 90% of the likeness), the other is the smiling face head (which does not work for me, it does not look like Johnny Depp at all in my opinion.)

For this figure, the strongest part is really the costume and the accessories.

How Hot Toys use different material and attention to details to make the cannibal king crown (headdress) is amazing.

HT-Cannibal10Hot Toys captured and layered every piece of the clothing on the figure amazingly. At first, I felt the sleeves of the shirt are too large. But after checking the movie again, the sleeves are indeed pretty loose. Not to mention that Hot Toys even create  a little bit of dusty effect on the shirt to make it movie accurate.

The larger accessories: The saber with scabbard, the flintlock pistol with holster, and the feathered scepter are no exception with great details!

The only nitpick is the feathered scepter which is sculpted with solid plastic. It is too heavy for him to hold. I wish Hot Toys should have made the feathered scepter using the same material as the crown. Not only it will be lighter in weight, it also looks even more realistic.

The small accessories: The little chicken feet and the toes necklace are disgusting with extreme likeness. Very cool!!The compass can open up even!

HT-CannibalLater on, I purchased some accessories belongs to the Hot Toys DX-06 Jack Sparrow over ebay. I thought those accessories fit in the theme of this figure very well. The additional accessories are the rum bottle, and the extra hand sculpt. (As shown in above photo) Looks like a party animal, isn’t it?!

HT-Cannibal08This earlier Hot Toy release is not perfect, but from this figure we can definitely see how come Hot Toys is so successful today. They had put every bit of effort to attempt to make this figure as perfect as possible.
